The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a iconic symbol of Washington, D.C., has become the center of a controversy involving vandalism and algae growth. President Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to voice his concerns, blaming unknown individuals for damaging the recently renovated site.
The reflecting pool, which underwent a $14.8 million restoration project, has been plagued by issues such as peeling paint and algae growth, just weeks after its completion. Trump’s accusations come amidst a broader effort to beautify the nation’s capital ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
Allegations of Vandalism and Chemical Damage
President Trump has accused vandals of using chemicals to damage the reflecting pool’s newly installed surface. He claimed that the damage is similar to that caused by chemicals used on the National Mall. Trump also mentioned that the vandals destroyed the grass surrounding the pool and harmed the inside surface.
The president’s comments follow the appearance of a large message, “86 47,” etched into the grass near the National Mall. Administration officials have characterized this message as threatening, with “86” sometimes used as slang for removing something and “47” referring to Trump as the nation’s 47th president.
Algae Growth and Cleanup Efforts
Despite the recent renovation, the reflecting pool has been beset by an algae bloomturning the water green and prompting an intensive cleanup effort. The National Park Service and contractors have deployed chemicals and ozone nanobubbles to mitigate the algae growth. Workers have also used a swimming pool-style vacuum system to remove algae from the bottom of the pool.
Trump stated that most of the algae has been removed and that the vandalized area would be repaired by the following week. He also mentioned that law enforcement is actively investigating the alleged vandalism. Images posted on social media showed National Guard personnel and U.S. Park Police officers patrolling the area.
Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigations
Videos posted on social media appeared to show people gathered near the reflecting pool, criticizing the renovation project and celebrating the algae growth. Additionally, new video footage circulating on social media appears to show U.S. Park Police detaining a man near the reflecting pool, as officials continue to investigate alleged vandalism at the site.
One of the onlookers was David “Davey” Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, who was arrested and detained for five hours after touching a piece of the detached coating. Hearn stated that he did not remove, tear, rip, break, or destroy any of the coating. The National Guard member who arrested him was unable to specify which federal law he had violated.
As the investigation continues, the reflecting pool remains a focal point of controversy and concern, with President Trump vowing to address the issues and hold those responsible accountable.
