Photographer Mike Nelson recounts his extraordinary journey from being a young assistant to photographing Nancy Pelosi for The Advocate's cover, spanning 15 years.

Mike Nelson's 15-year journey photographing Nancy Pelosi for The Advocate

In the world of photography, some moments define a career. For Mike Nelson, one such moment began on November 17, 2011, in the ornate office of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the U.S. Capitol. Little did he know that this day would mark the beginning of a 15-year journey that would culminate in a historic photograph.

Nelson, now a renowned photographer, was then a young assistant setting up lighting for photographer Tim Coburn during a magazine cover shoot. As Pelosi moved through the portrait setups, Nelson captured behind-the-scenes photos with his BlackBerry, unaware of the significance that day would hold.

An unexpected opportunity

Fast forward to June 22, 2026. Nelson received a text from The Advocate’s Christopher Wiggins, offering him the opportunity to photograph Pelosi for their September/October cover issue. This was not just any assignment; it was a chance to photograph one of the most influential political figures in U.S. history.

Nelson’s journey to this point had been marked by dedication and hard work. He had already photographed two other trailblazing politicians for The Advocate: former Vice President Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Sarah McBride. The opportunity to photograph Pelosi was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

The return to Pelosi’s office

On July 23, 2026, Nelson found himself back in Pelosi’s office, this time as the lead photographer. The interview with Pelosi was conducted by Christopher Wiggins, while Nelson set up his equipment, positioning the backdrop and lights with precision. He recalled the excitement and nervousness of his younger self, standing in the same room nearly 15 years earlier.

As the interview concluded, Nelson directed Pelosi into position, capturing a series of portraits. The session was a blur of activity, with Nelson guiding Pelosi’s gaze and adjusting his camera settings. When the shoot was over, Pelosi reviewed the images on Nelson’s laptop, approving of the vision he had captured.

A forgotten cover and a full circle moment

As Nelson prepared for the magazine’s release, he decided to research Pelosi’s previous appearances on The Advocate’s cover. To his surprise, he discovered that the February 2012 issue featured Pelosi on the cover, photographed by Tim Coburn—the same shoot Nelson had assisted on 15 years earlier. The realization was a moment of awe and reflection.

Nelson texted Wiggins about his discovery, who shared his excitement. The full circle moment was a testament to Nelson’s growth as a photographer and the serendipitous nature of his career. It was a reminder that life has a way of bringing us back to where we started, often in the most unexpected ways.

This story is not just about a photographer and his subject; it’s about the journey, the dedication, and the moments that define a career. It’s a tale of how life can bring us full circle, reminding us that we are exactly where we are meant to be.
