The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has charged Kenneth Wayne Bardwell, a resident of West Bloomfield, with wire fraud in connection with an alleged investment scheme. The scheme revolved around the proposed Motown Sports Village a sprawling youth sports and entertainment complex planned for Romulus, Michigan. Bardwell is accused of raising millions from investors while using the funds for personal luxuries instead of acquiring land for the project.
The FBI’s investigation reveals a complex web of deception that spanned several years. Bardwell and his associates allegedly operated through multiple companies, including Motown Sports Group Holdings Inc. and Motown Sports Real-Estate Acquisitions Land & Development LLC to solicit investments. The project was promoted as a multi-billion-dollar sports destination, promising investors stock certificates tied to the venture’s future public trading.
The Alleged Fraud and Extravagant Spending
The FBI’s affidavit supporting the complaint details a pattern of misconduct and extravagant spending. Investigators found that Bardwell made almost no effort to use investor money to purchase land for the proposed complex. Instead, the funds were allegedly used to support a lavish lifestyle, including spending at gentlemen’s clubs luxury retailers, and living expenses for Bardwell, his wife, and a girlfriend.
Banking records reviewed by investigators showed a pattern of deposits quickly followed by large withdrawals and personal spending. For example, one Huntington Bank checking account had about $4.4 million deposited over 14 months. The spending from this account included high-end purchases from retailers such as Zeidman’s JewelryNeiman MarcusGucci and Louis Vuitton as well as charges at strip clubs in Romulus and Dearborn.
The Public Financing Proposal and Its Rejection
In 2026, Bardwell and Motown Sports sought public financing, presenting a plan to Romulus requesting $152 million in public bonds, a 15-mill tax increase, and a 2% sales tax in a limited area of the city. The proposal was denied due to serious legal concerns with the financing plan. Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight expressed relief that the city had refused to provide taxpayer money for the project, stating that the news was ultimately disappointing but that the city would not tolerate attempts to take advantage of its residents.
The Role of a Confidential Informant
The FBI’s investigation was aided by a confidential informant described as an exotic dancer who was interviewed on May 21, 2026. The woman told investigators that Bardwell pitched her to invest in the project and later hired her to work for Motown Sports. She revealed that Bardwell recruited exotic dancers to work for him and that employees ran personal errands and made copies of investment brochures. The informant also disclosed that Bardwell hired five local police officers as a personal security detail, who escorted him to strip clubs multiple times a week.
FBI surveillance confirmed these allegations, observing Bardwell at the Landing Strip Lounge in Romulus on July 9, 2026. Bardwell was escorted home by four vehicles registered to off-duty police officers. The affidavit also raises questions about online crowdfunding metrics used to promote the investment opportunity. Records obtained from the PicMii Crowdfunding platform showed a pattern consistent with fabricated interest, with most reservations submitted from IP addresses in the Philippines and Tokelau.
The FBI is seeking information from any individuals who may have invested money with Motown Sports Group Holdings, Inc. or Kenneth Bardwell, or who may otherwise have information pertinent to this investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert Moran and investigated by the FBI Detroit Fraud and Financial Crimes Task Force, with assistance from the Birmingham Police Department and Bloomfield Township Police Department.
