The House of the Dragon season 3 premiere has set the stage for an intense battle, marking the beginning of the Battle of the Gullet. Among the casualties is the formidable Admiral Sharako Lohar, portrayed by Abigail Thorn. Lohar’s departure has left a significant impact on both the narrative and Thorn herself.
Thorn, known for her role as the gender-defying admiral, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring such a complex character to life. “It was just such a gift as an actor to get to plan and execute that kind of arc, and to be trusted to bring it home like that on the biggest show in the world. It’s so wonderful,” Thorn shared.
Admiral Lohar’s Final Stand
In the season premiere, Admiral Lohar’s Triarchy fleet aligns with Aegon II Targaryen, positioning them at the heart of the long-awaited battle. Thorn described her character as “a woman who kills people,” highlighting Lohar’s fierce determination. Despite her alliances, Lohar’s personal vendetta against Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) drives her actions. This obsession leads her to break ranks and engage in a brutal sea battle, ultimately resulting in her demise at the hands of Corlys’ bastard son, Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim).
Thorn revealed that filming the death scene was emotionally challenging. “It was pretty emotionally tough [filming that scene],” she admitted. “It’s hard to be strangled to death 20 times a day, but I think I was really happy with the work that we did.” The scene also marked a significant moment for Lohar’s character, as it was the first time viewers saw her afraid.
The Significance of Lohar’s Character
Thorn took pride in portraying a character who defies traditional gender norms. “To play a woman who kicks ass is so refreshing,” she stated. Lohar’s polyamorous lifestyle and defiance of gender expectations made her a standout character in the series. Thorn’s performance has resonated with audiences, with one fan requesting the iconic line, “I want you to fuck my wives,” to be signed in their book.
Beyond her role in House of the Dragon Thorn has been involved in other notable projects. She recently premiered her science fiction film Again Again at the Seattle International Film Festival and has credits in LadhoodDjango and The Acolyte.
The Battle of the Gullet: Key Moments
The Battle of the Gullet has been a pivotal moment in the series, with several notable deaths. Ser Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) meets his end when Lohar tosses him overboard. Ser Jason Lannister, Tyland’s twin brother, is also killed off-screen, with his severed head presented to Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) makes a fateful decision to lock his mother, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), in Dragonstone, leading to his own demise when he is dragged underwater by anti-dragon weaponry.
The fate of Lord Corlys Velaryon remains uncertain after his intense battle with Lohar. The season premiere has set the stage for a thrilling and emotionally charged season ahead.
