The modern workforce is constantly seeking ways to improve work-life balance and One approach gaining traction is the four-day workweek. A recent study, published in Frontiers in Psychology is taking an in-depth look at how reduced working hours impact physical and mental health, as well as workplace performance.
The Sussex 4-Day Week study is unique in its approach, combining subjective assessments with objective physiological, behavioral, and neuroimaging measures. This comprehensive method aims to provide a clearer picture of the benefits and challenges associated with a shorter workweek.
The Need for a Comprehensive Study
Long working hours have long been linked to adverse effects on health, well-being, sleep, and work performance. However, much of the existing evidence relies on self-reported outcomes, leaving the biological and psychological mechanisms underlying these benefits insufficiently understood. The Sussex study aims to address these gaps by using a multi-modal approach.
The study involves at least 150 working-age adults in the United Kingdom, divided into two groups: a working-time-reduction group and a control group. Participants in the working-time-reduction group have adopted various schedules, including a 4-day workweek, a 9-day fortnight, or shorter working days. This flexibility reflects the diverse needs of different organizations.
Study Procedures and Measures
The study protocol includes a 2-week baseline period followed by 12 weeks of reduced working time, with weekly questionnaires completed throughout. Participants are also offered time-management training to help them adapt to the new schedule. The study uses a broad range of measures, including health, well-being, work, behavior, and biological function.
Weekly questionnaires assess positive and negative affect, burnout, psychological detachment from work, work engagement, task performance, and sleep quality. Additional baseline and end-of-trial questionnaires cover depression, anxiety, stress, mental wellbeing, physical activity, diet, sleep, job control, job support, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intention to quit.
The study also includes objective measures such as time-use diaries, sleep monitoring using wrist-worn actigraphy devices, blood sampling to assess inflammatory markers, and MRI assessments to examine brain function and organization.
Primary and Secondary Outcomes
The primary outcome of the study is the difference in physical and mental health from baseline to the end of the trial among participants undergoing working-time reduction, compared with controls. Secondary outcomes include weekly changes in self-reported well-being and an assessment of whether these changes are maintained at a 6-month follow-up.
This comprehensive study aims to provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of a four-day workweek, helping employers and employees make informed decisions about work schedules and well-being.
