BlackSun Private Equity, a newly established firm with roots in politics, sports, and entertainment, has successfully raised $1 billion for its inaugural fund. This ambitious venture, dubbed Mega Fund I is targeting a staggering $7 billion and aims to invest in professional sports, media, entertainment, fintech, and commercial real estate.
The firm’s unique approach emphasizes community engagement and stakeholder participation, setting it apart from traditional private equity platforms. Innovative Investments and Strategic Partnerships
BlackSun is already making waves with several high-profile initiatives. One of its early moves is forming a group to bid for the Seattle SuperSonics aiming to bring the NBA team back to the city. This effort is being pursued in partnership with Native World Sports a platform dedicated to advancing tribal nation participation in professional sports and entertainment.
The firm is also spearheading the creation of the World American Football League a groundbreaking venture where players would own equity in their teams. Additionally, BlackSun is developing Knockout Fights a boxing and martial arts platform that offers signed fighters a guaranteed salary, lifetime healthcare coverage, and a retirement pension, all supported by a share of broadcast and streaming revenue.
A Leadership Team with Diverse Expertise
BlackSun’s leadership team is a powerhouse of talent and experience. Founder Atonn Muhammad is a former college football player and the founder of the Real Hip-Hop Network. Nery Gomez a longtime investment banker, serves as the firm’s chief operating officer. Nick Rathod the strategy and communications chief, brings a wealth of political experience, having served in the Obama White House and worked on high-profile campaigns.
The team also includes John Godina a four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist in shot put, who founded the elite ALTIS track and field training center. Notable athletes such as Jason KiddRoy Jones Jr.Lawrence Taylor and Gary Clark are also involved as investors and advisors.
Global Capital Initiatives and Community Engagement
BlackSun’s capital initiatives include a $100 million Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) a $500 million Private Investment in Public Equity (PIPE) program and a $750 million acquisition bridge facility. The firm has appointed Greenstone Equity Partners as its exclusive global placement agent, with Changa Ingram a former senior manager at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, leading the charge.
To extend participation to a broader base of investors, BlackSun has launched a community equity program managed through the DealMaker Securities fundraising platform. The first campaign, supporting the World American Football League, is set to launch in October.
