Turkish Airlines is embarking on a significant overhaul of its long-haul offerings, aiming to enhance passenger experience and boost profitability. The airline’s new chairman, Ahmet Olmuştur, is steering the carrier through a strategic shift that focuses on optimizing revenue from existing routes and aircraft, rather than merely expanding its network.

The decision to reintroduce premium economy marks a notable reversal for Turkish Airlines, which had previously argued that its business model did not require a mid-tier cabin. This move is part of a broader strategy to adapt to changing market dynamics and passenger preferences.

Reviving Premium Economy

The airline’s premium economy cabin, initially introduced as Comfort Class on Boeing 777-300ERs, was discontinued around 2013 due to operational challenges and perceived low demand. However, the aviation landscape has evolved significantly since then. Corporate travel policies have tightened, and leisure travelers are increasingly willing to pay for enhanced comfort without opting for business class.

Turkish Airlines plans to introduce the new premium economy cabin on its Airbus A350s starting in early 2028. The cabin will occupy approximately 8-9% of the current economy capacity, offering passengers additional legroom and comfort. This strategic move aligns with the airline’s goal of extracting better revenue from each aircraft and route.

Enhancing Business Class with Crystal Suites

In addition to the premium economy revival, Turkish Airlines is preparing to launch its Crystal Business Class Suite featuring fully enclosed suites with adjustable doors, electronically controlled privacy panels, and wireless charging. The rollout of this upgraded business class product is scheduled to begin in early 2027, initially on newly delivered A350 aircraft and refurbished Boeing 777s.

The Crystal Business Class Suite represents a significant upgrade in luxury and privacy, catering to high-end travelers seeking an enhanced in-flight experience. This initiative is part of Turkish Airlines’ broader effort to compete with other global carriers offering premium long-haul services.

Expanding the Network with New Routes

Turkish Airlines is also expanding its network by adding new destinations, including Lima, Peru, to its Latin America route map. This expansion is part of the airline’s ambitious plan to operate a fleet of over 800 aircraft and serve 345 destinations by 2033. However, the focus has shifted from rapid expansion to more adaptive and profitability-focused growth.

The airline has plans to take delivery of 420 aircraft between 2026 and 2036, with a significant number of widebody and cargo aircraft. The Airbus A350-1000, in particular, will play a crucial role in the airline’s long-haul strategy, enabling nonstop flights to destinations such as Melbourne, Sydney, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.

Turkish Airlines’ strategic initiatives reflect a more measured approach to growth, prioritizing revenue optimization and passenger satisfaction. As the airline navigates aircraft supply constraints and market dynamics, it remains committed to its long-term vision of becoming one of the world’s leading carriers.
