As the new school year begins, it’s crucial to ensure that LGBTQ+ students feel supported and safe in their learning environments. With eight years of experience in both virtual and in-person classrooms, Damon R. Carbajal, director of Organizing & Training Programs at Glisten shares invaluable insights and practical tips for parents, guardians, and allies.
The Journey Through school can be challenging for LGBTQ+ students, who often face unique obstacles. By understanding these challenges and taking proactive steps, adults can make a significant difference in the lives of these students.
Building a Supportive Foundation
Education is a continuous process, and staying informed about LGBTQ+ issues is essential. Two leading organizations, Glisten and PFLAG offer a wealth of resources for schools and communities aiming to create more inclusive environments. Glisten focuses on K-12 education, while PFLAG provides support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
Understanding the policies of your student’s school and district is another critical step. These policies, often found on school websites, set the standard for behavior and can be powerful tools for advocacy. Pay close attention to anti-bullying policies and those that specifically address sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Importance of Respecting Autonomy
Respecting a student’s autonomy is paramount. As LGBTQ+ individuals, students have the right to decide when, how, and to whom they disclose their identity. It’s essential to trust their instincts and affirm their choices. If a student is not ready to be out at school, support their decision and be there for them when they are ready.
Finding Community and Allies
Supporting an LGBTQ+ student is a collective effort. Finding a community of like-minded individuals can provide much-needed support and resources. Organizations like Glisten and PFLAG chapters offer safe spaces for parents, guardians, and allies to connect and share experiences.
Identifying at least one supportive adult within the school can be a game-changer. This ally could be a teacher, counselor, librarian, nurse, or custodian. Having a trusted adult on their side can provide students with a sense of security and support.
Empowering Students
Empowering students to take charge of their school journey is crucial. While it’s natural to want to protect them, giving them the skills and autonomy to handle situations on their own is equally important. Simple questions like, “If a kid says something to you at school, do you want me to call, or do you want to handle it and tell me after?” can open up important conversations and empower students to take control.
Recognizing the Signs
According to the 2025 National School Climate Survey LGBTQ+ students are more likely to experience hostile school environments. Being aware of subtle signs, such as dropping grades, sudden illnesses, or shifts in friend groups, can indicate underlying issues. From personal experience, nine times out of ten, these signs point to some form of bullying.
Reminding students that they are loved and valued is a powerful way to support them. Explicitly stating this can serve as a beacon of hope during challenging times. Knowing that they have a champion in their corner can make a significant difference in their school experience.
This list is not exhaustive, but it provides a solid foundation for supporting LGBTQ+ students. Knowledge is power, and the more informed both students and adults are, the smoother the school year will be. As an educator, Damon R. Carbajal emphasizes that there are many allies in your corner, and you are not alone in this journey.
