Supergirl Star Milly Alcock Discusses Kara Zor-El’s Queer Interpretation

Milly Alcock, the star of Supergirl, shares her thoughts on the character's queer appeal and the fan reactions she has encountered.

Supergirl Star Milly Alcock Discusses Kara Zor-El's Queer Interpretation

In a recent interview with journalist Ana Paula Barbosa for her Narrativa Feminina platform, Milly Alcock, the actress who brings Supergirl to life, shared her thoughts on why many queer fans resonate with the character Kara Zor-El.

Alcock highlighted that Kara’s appeal lies in her ability to transcend traditional gender norms. “I think because she doesn’t live inside the binary of what we think a woman should be,” Alcock explained. “That is what makes her so special and so exciting and so new.”

Alcock’s Personal Connection to Kara’s Queer Appeal

The actress revealed that she also sees a queer interpretation in Kara’s character. “I kind of thought that as well,” she admitted. “I was like … She’d do what she’d want to do in that regard anyway.” Alcock’s personal connection to the character is further emphasized by her close relationships with queer friends, making her honored by the fan interpretations.

Before stepping into the role of Supergirl, Alcock was part of the popular Game of Thrones franchise, playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in the prequel series House of the Dragon. In the show, Targaryen shares a complex, sapphic relationship with her best frenemy Alicent Hightower, adding to Alcock’s experience with queer character portrayals.

Fan Reactions and Online Criticism

Alcock’s comments about Kara’s queer appeal did not go unnoticed by fans. Some online critics expressed disapproval, with one person even suggesting that James Gunn, the director of the 2026 film Superman, should “gag her.” It’s worth noting that Supergirl is actually directed by Craig Gillespie, known for his work on films like I, Tonya and Cruella.

Alcock has faced intense scrutiny from fans since her casting was announced. She has been vocal about the attacks she has received, both from her time on House of the Dragon and her role as Supergirl. “I am aware that I am going to get comments,” she told Vanity Fair. “But I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”

The CW’s Supergirl and Queerbaiting Allegations

This interpretation of Kara Zor-El is not the first to imply the character’s queerness. The CW’s Supergirl series has been accused of queerbaiting, particularly in its portrayal of the relationship between Zor-El and Lena Luthor. Fans of the show sensed sexual tension between the two characters, but nothing concrete ever materialized.

Despite the criticism, Alcock remains committed to her role and the character’s queer appeal. Her insights provide a deeper understanding of Supergirl’s complex identity and the impact it has on fans.
