The small town of Senatobia, Mississippi, is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that has left the community in shock and mourning. On a seemingly ordinary Sunday afternoon, a routine shoplifting call at a local Walmart turned deadly, resulting in the loss of a 1-year-old child’s life and igniting a wave of protests and calls for justice.
The incident, which occurred on June 14, 2026, has drawn national attention and raised serious questions about police conduct and the use of force. As the community seeks answers and justice, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is leading a thorough inquiry into the shooting, with the support of local law enforcement agencies.
The Incident: A Tragic Turn of Events
The chain of events that led to the tragic outcome began when law enforcement officers responded to a shoplifting report at the Walmart located on Highway 51. Upon arrival, officers encountered two adults and a child fleeing from the store and entering a vehicle. According to the MBI, the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of the officers, nearly striking one of them.
In a critical moment, one officer discharged their weapon, and the vehicle fled the scene. The occupants of the vehicle later sought medical attention at a local hospital, where the 1-year-old child, identified as Kohen Kartier Wiley, was pronounced dead. Another adult in the vehicle sustained critical injuries. The Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the incident, but the MBI has not yet released the identity of the officer or officers who fired their weapons.
Community Outrage and Protests
The tragic loss of life has sparked outrage and protests within the Senatobia community and beyond. Demonstrators gathered outside the Walmart on Tuesday evening, demanding answers and justice for Kohen Wiley. The protests turned tense as law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, highlighting the heightened emotions and frustrations surrounding the incident.
Community members expressed their concerns and grief, with many emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. Aretha Lester, a local resident, shared her fears and the impact of the incident on the community: “Today it’s in their community, tomorrow it’s in mine, tomorrow it might be on my doorstep. I have a child. I have grandchildren too.”
Investigation and Calls for Transparency
The MBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, with five agents gathering statements and evidence to present to the attorney general’s office. Sean Tindell, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the investigation. He urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to continue without intimidation from investigators or witnesses.
“It’s important that we keep civility during this process so that we can get to the bottom of it,” Tindell stated. The MBI has committed to releasing body-camera and dash-camera footage upon the completion of the investigation, aiming to maintain public trust through transparency.
The family of Kohen Wiley has retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump to represent them. Crump expressed the family’s grief and their determination to seek justice: “A 1-year-old child is dead because police officers in Mississippi opened fire on a car in a crowded Walmart parking lot. We intend to seek justice for baby Kohen and the life that was stolen from him.”
As the investigation continues, the community of Senatobia and the nation await the findings and the steps that will be taken to address this tragic incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
