His body was discovered on July 6th raising numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The case has drawn national attention, with activists and community members calling for a transparent and thorough investigation. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff John Ledbetter has stated that there is no evidence of foul play, but many remain skeptical and demand more answers.
The Disappearance and Search for Nolan Wells
Wells was last seen on the northwest tip of Horn Island a remote barrier island part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore on the afternoon of July 4th. He did not return to the mainland with his group, prompting his mother to report him missing that night. A multi-agency search effort, including the Coast GuardNational Park Service and local volunteers, was launched to find Wells.
The search intensified over the next two days, with authorities combing the island and surrounding waters. Tragically, a U.S. Park Ranger discovered Wells’ body on the morning of July 6th. The body was identified by family members, and an autopsy was scheduled for July 7th to determine the cause of death.

Sheriff Ledbetter initially stated that Wells had chosen to stay on the island, a statement that has been widely criticized. Additionally, the sheriff’s office did not issue a press release about the missing teen until 12:31 p.m. on Sunday more than 12 hours after his mother reported him missing.
Activists and community members have pointed to a pattern of suspicious deaths involving young Black Americans, many of which have been quickly ruled as suicides or accidents without thorough investigations. RaeShanda Lias an influential creator and activist, has highlighted several cases where Black victims were found dead in public areas, often by hanging, with little to no investigation into the circumstances.
The family of Nolan Wells has hired renowned attorney Ben Crump to seek justice for their son. Crump has called for a transparent and thorough investigation, stating that the family deserves the truth. The family has also set up a GoFundMe campaign to support their efforts, which has raised over $118,000 as of July 8th.
The Community’s Response
The Ocean Springs School District, where Wells graduated and played football, has expressed shock and heartbreak over his death. The district described Wells as a kind and hardworking young man who left a lasting impression on his teachers, coaches, teammates, and community. The football coach, Jake Bramlett praised Wells’ character and leadership, stating that he was loved deeply by his teammates and coaches.
