Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Vows to Protect Transgender Rights

Graham Platner, Maine's Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, is making waves with his strong stance on transgender rights as he campaigns against Republican incumbent Susan Collins.

Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Vows to Protect Transgender Rights

In the wake of marching in the Portland Pride ParadeGraham Platner Maine’s Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, has made a bold commitment to combat federal attacks on transgender Americans. As he gears up for a closely watched general election against Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins Platner’s advocacy has garnered significant attention and endorsements.

Platner’s campaign has recently received a boost from the Christopher Street Project a political action committee dedicated to electing advocates for transgender rights. The group’s executive director, Tyler Hack expressed enthusiasm for Platner’s candidacy, emphasizing the urgent need to protect transgender rights in Congress.

Endorsements and Priorities

The Christopher Street Project’s endorsement came shortly after Platner received support from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Alexis McGill Johnson president of the organization, highlighted Platner’s defense of reproductive freedom, contrasting it with Collins’s vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh who later voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Hack stressed the importance of Platner’s role in preventing anti-trans provisions from being included in federal spending legislation. ‘We are seeing poison pills in almost every budget bill unrelated to anything else that attack health care for trans kids and military families, that attack the rights and freedoms of trans federal employees,’ Hack said. They called for ‘clean budget bills’ without anti-trans provisions and urged Congress to protect private patient information from the Trump administration’s overreach.

Platner wholeheartedly agreed with Hack’s priorities. ‘Yes, indeed. They most certainly do,’ he affirmed. He emphasized that protecting one marginalized community strengthens broader civil rights and privacy protections. ‘When you stand up for one group’s rights, you’re actually standing up for everybody’s rights, which I firmly believe in,’ Platner stated.

Defending Transgender Rights

Platner described attacks on transgender Americans as a distraction from critical issues like economic inequality and healthcare. ‘This is just a mechanism of people with a lot of money trying to come in and get us all divided around culture war issues so we don’t sit around and talk about raising their taxes,’ he explained.

He rejected the notion of Democrats retreating on transgender rights, particularly regarding participation in school sports. ‘You can either be a coward about it, and you can play into their game, or you cannot be a coward, and you can understand that trans rights are human rights,’ Platner asserted. ‘Human rights cover absolutely everyone.’

The U.S. Supreme Court may issue opinions on state laws prohibiting transgender girls and women from participating in female school sports teams. Platner views this controversy as an ‘invented moral panic’ designed to divide working-class communities. He called for candidates to stand firmly in support of the LGBTQ+ community without hedging or apologizing.

Protecting LGBTQ+ Troops and Veterans

Platner also pledged to protect transgender service members and LGBTQ+ veterans. He criticized the Trump administration’s efforts to exclude transgender people from military service and the recent changes to LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinators. ‘This is an ideological White House that is pushing its ideology and its bigotry, using its power within federal agencies where it feels like it has power to further that goal,’ Platner said.

He warned that the administration’s military policies reflect a broader effort to define who qualifies as a ‘real American.’ Platner emphasized the need for federal legislation to protect and fund specialized services for LGBTQ+ veterans. ‘If you serve the country with honor and dignity and respect, we’re not going to treat you with that now just because we don’t like who you are,’ he stated.

Despite controversies from his past, including the use of antigay slurs in Reddit posts, Platner secured a significant victory in Maine’s Democratic primary. His reception at Portland Pride and the enthusiastic support from the LGBTQ+ community indicate a strong connection with voters. Hack noted that Platner has united both local organization leaders and rank-and-file folks in a way that no other candidate has.

Platner welcomed further input and endorsements from LGBTQ+ organizations but emphasized the importance of relationships with advocates inside Maine. ‘The input from people in the state of Maine, the organizations doing this work in the state, matters to me more than absolutely anything else,’ he said. He acknowledged the unique challenges faced by Maine’s LGBTQ+ community and pledged to continue building relationships with local advocates.
