In the vibrant tapestry of LGBTQ+ culture, new voices continually emerge, reshaping the landscape with their unique stories and talents. Among these rising stars is Ezra Sosaa dancer whose journey from Provo, Utah, to the national spotlight is as inspiring as it is remarkable. Recognized by Lexus and OUT magazine as a new-generation LGBTQ+ tastemaker, Sosa is setting a new standard in dance and culture, much like Lexus’s commitment to excellence in every vehicle it creates.
Sosa’s story is one of resilience and self-discovery. Dance, he says, was his savior. “Dance basically saved me,” he shares with OUT. “It was an outlet. It was my expression. It gave me a way to speak and have a voice when I didn’t feel confident enough to have one.” This passion for dance began unexpectedly, sparked by a childhood habit of shuffling his feet, as his mom often reminded him.
From Provo to the National Stage
Growing up in Provo, Utah, Sosa found solace and joy in dance. However, his journey was not without challenges. As a queer Latino performer, he often faced skepticism and doubt. “If I actually listened to those people, I would have stopped being who I am,” he admits. But Sosa refused to let others dictate his path. Instead, he embraced his uniqueness, turning what some saw as a limitation into his greatest strength.
His perseverance paid off. Sosa’s authenticity and talent quickly garnered a devoted following. As a finalist on Dancing with the Starshe showcased his skills on a national stage, inspiring countless others with his performances. “The more I was able to understand and be okay with my queerness, the more people loved watching me and loved watching me perform,” he reflects. “It’s become my superpower.”
The Power of Representation
Sosa’s visibility as an openly gay performer carries significant weight. He understands the impact of representation, especially for young LGBTQ+ individuals searching for someone who looks like them. “Pride to me now is celebration. It’s joy. It’s us coming together once a year to really celebrate and talk about the advocacy of our community,” he says. “What I love about being an out, proud gay person is the amount of strength it takes to do that.”
His journey is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the importance of representation. Sosa hopes to continue expanding his career, one day stepping into a hosting role. But regardless of where his path leads, he remains committed to showing up authentically. “When I was that kid in Provo, if I would see what I am now, I just wouldn’t believe it,” he says. “Now I am the one who is able to inspire many to hopefully live their true selves.”
A Legacy of Inspiration
Sosa credits much of his success to his “warrior” mother, who believed in him long before the rest of the world did. Her unwavering support allowed him to pursue his passion despite the challenges. Looking ahead, Sosa aims to continue inspiring others, whether through his performances, mentoring emerging dancers, or advocating for the LGBTQ+ community.
In a world where representation matters more than ever, Ezra Sosa stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. His journey from a small town in Utah to the national stage is a reminder that embracing one’s true self can lead to extraordinary achievements. And for Sosa, that’s a standard worth setting.
