The Texas Senate race has taken a dramatic turn as Republican candidate Ken Paxton has publicly criticized his Democratic opponent, James Talarico, for what appears to be a significant shift in stance regarding gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This debate has sparked a heated exchange between the two candidates, highlighting the contentious nature of this issue in Texas politics.
The controversy began when Talarico, during a recent podcast appearance, stated, “I oppose gender reassignment surgeries for minors.” This statement seemed to contradict his previous support for transgender rights, including his vote against a 2026 bill that aimed to ban “procedures and treatments for gender transitioning” for children. At the time, Talarico had argued, “I think it’s clear that this is not about science or medicine, and certainly not about keeping kids safe. I think this is about discriminating against people who are transgender.”
Paxton Accuses Talarico of Flip-Flopping
Paxton swiftly responded to Talarico’s recent comments, accusing him of flip-flopping on the issue to appeal to a broader electorate. “This is just the latest example of Talarico masquerading as a moderate when the truth is he’s the most radical Democrat to ever run statewide in Texas history,” Paxton stated in a news release. He further claimed that Talarico “has proven he will lie time and time again because he knows his radical policies are extreme and completely out-of-touch with the people of Texas.”
Talarico Defends His Position
In response to Paxton’s accusations, Talarico’s communications director, JT Ennis, provided a detailed explanation. Ennis clarified that Talarico had opposed the 2026 bill, SB 14, because it could potentially affect “Texas children suffering from rare genetic diseases that have nothing to do with being transgender.” Ennis emphasized that Talarico had supported amendments to address these concerns, which were ultimately rejected. This context suggests that Talarico’s opposition to the bill was more nuanced than initially perceived.
Previous Controversies and Paxton’s Reactions
This is not the first time Talarico has faced criticism for his views on gender. Before entering the Senate race, conservatives had taken issue with his statements about God being a supreme being of “no gender” and the existence of six biological human sexes. After entering the campaign, Talarico acknowledged that these comments were “cringey” and had “missed the mark.” Paxton, known for his sharp rhetoric, responded with derogatory nicknames such as “Talafreako” and “six-gender Jimmy,” further escalating the tension between the two candidates.
The use of transgender issues, particularly those involving transgender youth, has become a powerful tool for conservatives in states like Texas. This strategy has proven effective in rallying support and shaping public opinion. As the race for the Texas Senate seat heats up, the debate over gender-affirming care continues to be a central issue, with both candidates vying to position themselves as the better advocate for the people of Texas. The election, set for November 3, 2026, promises to be a closely watched contest with significant implications for the future of transgender rights in the state.
