IDF Responds to Deadly Hezbollah Attack in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the deaths of four soldiers following a Hezbollah drone attack in southern Lebanon. Among the casualties is Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, the 32-year-old commander of the 52nd Battalion within the 401st Armored Brigade. The incident has sparked a significant response from the IDF, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region.

The attack occurred near the village of Kfartebnit, with the initial strike happening around 12:20 a.m. on Thursday night. A suspicious aerial targetidentified as a first-person-view (FPV) dronestruck a tank operated by the 52nd Battalion troops. The military is still investigating the exact nature of the strike but has confirmed the deaths of Ben Simhon and three other soldiers.

The Life and Legacy of Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon

Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, a resident of Kibbutz Beit Hashita, had taken command of the 52nd Battalion in April 2026. He assumed leadership during a challenging period, following the serious injury of his predecessor in combat. Ben Simhon was known for his determination and responsibility, leading his battalion with distinction throughout the past two months of fighting.

Ben Simhon’s military career was marked by several senior command positions within the 401st Armored Brigade. He also served as the chief of staff to the head of Northern Command during Operation Northern Arrows in 2026. His family has a strong military background, with four of his brothers serving in the 401st Brigade and another in the Golani Brigade. Ben Simhon is survived by his wife, Maj. A., a combat officer in the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps and Border Defense Corps, and their two young daughters.

Escalation and Response

Following the initial attack, a second incident occurred around 4 a.m., where an FPV drone struck a force from the Commando Brigade combat team. Five soldiers were wounded, including a reserve officer who sustained serious injuries. The IDF responded with heavy overnight strikes across southern Lebanon, targeting approximately 100 Hezbollah positions and infrastructure sites.

The IDF has described the attack as a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement by Hezbollah. In a statement, the military emphasized that the strikes were in response to repeated violations and aimed at Hezbollah terrorists and infrastructure sites. The IDF also warned residents of communities along the northern border to expect continued sounds of explosions due to ongoing operations.

Broader Implications

The recent fighting in Lebanon has had broader diplomatic repercussions. Iran canceled a planned delegation trip to Switzerland for talks related to the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, citing Israeli military operations in Lebanon as a violation of the agreement. Additionally, U.S. Vice President JD Vance postponed his trip to Switzerland, where technical talks on implementing the agreement were expected to begin.

The IDF has not yet released additional details about the circumstances of the attack or the identities of the other three slain soldiers. Further information is expected to be released as it becomes available. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions and the complex dynamics at play in the region.
