Free Party Packs for Safer Pride Celebrations in New York City

As Pride month kicks off, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in New York City is stepping up to ensure the LGBTQ+ community can celebrate safely and responsibly. The health center, renowned for its commitment to accessible healthcare for queer and trans individuals, is distributing free ‘party packs’ designed to minimize the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and promote safer sex practices.

The initiative comes at a crucial time, with rising STI transmission rates and the need for proactive health measures more important than ever. Callen-Lorde’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, emphasized the center’s dedication to community care, stating, “Callen-Lorde is gonna give it out to free to you.”

Comprehensive Safety Kits for Pride Celebrations

Each ‘party pack’ is thoughtfully curated to address various health and safety needs. The kits include a rapid HIV testing kit by OraSureDoxyPEP (a post-exposure prophylaxis for bacterial STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis), PrEP on demand, lube, sunscreen, lip balm, dental dams, and condoms. Additionally, the packs contain Fentanyl testing strips and naloxonean opioid overdose-reversing drug. Participants can also request to add Plan B to their kits.

The comprehensive nature of these kits reflects a holistic approach to health, addressing both sexual health and substance safety. Dr. Daskalakis highlighted the importance of such initiatives, especially given the recent rise in STI rates and the challenges faced by public health institutions.

Availability and Distribution Details

The free ‘party packs’ will be available for pickup at Callen-Lorde’s Chelsea Clinic located at 356 West 18th Street. Distribution will take place from noon on June 5 and 6as well as on June 12, 13, and 14. For those unable to visit the clinic, Callen-Lorde’s Social Media channels will provide updates on additional pickup locations.

This initiative is part of Callen-Lorde’s ongoing efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community, particularly during high-risk periods such as Pride month. By providing essential health resources, the center aims to foster a safer and more enjoyable celebration for all.

As the weather warms up and communities gather, the availability of these safety kits serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive health measures. Callen-Lorde’s commitment to community care is evident in its comprehensive approach to addressing the health needs of queer and trans individuals.
