The political landscape was set ablaze once again as former President Donald Trump walked out of an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press host Kristen Welker. The tense exchange, which aired on Sunday, revolved around Trump’s persistent claims of election fraud and his controversial remarks about the January 6 Capitol riot.
The interview, conducted in a barn during a farmers’ event in Wisconsin, was marred by technical difficulties and intermittent rain. Despite these challenges, the conversation quickly turned contentious when Trump reiterated his baseless assertions that the 2026 presidential election was rigged and that the California gubernatorial race was fraudulent.
Trump’s Contentious Claims and Welker’s Pushback
Trump’s assertions that the California gubernatorial race was rigged were met with skepticism from Welker, who pointed out that delays in vote counting are standard in California due to its meticulous election process. Trump, however, remained unfazed, claiming that the results were being manipulated.
When Welker asked for evidence to support his claims, Trump responded cryptically, stating, “All I have to do is look, and I listen.” This exchange escalated when Trump accused Welker and the media of being crookedleading to a heated argument. “You’re either crooked or you’re stupid,” Trump remarked, before abruptly ending the interview.
The January 6 Riot and the Anti-Weaponization Fund
The conversation took another contentious turn when Welker questioned Trump about his controversial anti-weaponization funda proposed $1.8 billion fund to compensate individuals who claim they were unfairly targeted by the government. Trump’s plan drew criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans, who feared it could benefit those involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Trump, however, deflected the question, repeating his unsubstantiated claim that the rioters were invited into the Capitol by FBI agents. He also suggested that the rioters took plea deals out of fear of longer prison sentences, a claim that has been widely debunked.
Trump’s Foreign Policy and the Iran Conflict
In addition to the election and January 6 discussions, Trump defended his decision to terminate the Iran nuclear deal and his subsequent military actions against Iran. He claimed that his administration had successfully dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, stating, “Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone.” However, these claims have been met with skepticism from experts and officials.
Trump also addressed rising gas prices, attributing them to the ongoing conflict with Iran. He assured that prices would drop once a deal was reached, although oil executives have indicated that it would take time to restore production and stabilize prices.
The interview concluded with Trump walking off the set, leaving Welker to reflect on the complications posed by the rain and technical difficulties. Despite the contentious ending, Welker expressed her willingness to sit down with Trump for another interview.
